Rathcormac speed limit set to increase
PROPOSALS to increased the speed limit from 50kph to 60kph through the village of Rathcormac has met with opposition from councillors.
The proposed new limit was one of many being suggested by Acting Director of Services, Tom Brennan.
Suggestions for new speed limits are being put forward by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, formerly the National Roads Authority.
Mayor, Cllr Hubert Keaney queried why the speed limit was increasing to 60kph in the village.
Cllr Seamus Kilgannon said he wouldn’t be able to support an increase in the speed limit.
Mr Brennan said Rathcormac didn’t meet the requirement of being the centre of a village and 60kph was seen as more appropriate than 50kph.
Mr Brennan also revealed it was planned for impose a 60kph zone at Castlegal NS on the main Donegal Road near Cliffoney at opening and closing times. It was also planned to reduce the 100kph limit to 80 kph just north of Cliffoney and also from Ballisodare to Larkhill, Beltra from 100kph to 80kph. There were also proposed lower changes at Ballygawley, Ballydoogan, Sooey and Geevagh.
A final draft of all the changes throughout the county would be sent to members soon, said Mr Brennan.
The public would also be allowed comment when the draft was put on display for a month while the Gardaí would also be contacted for their views.
Mr Brennan admitted that some of the proposed changes might not be approved by the council.
In response to Cllr Thomas Healy, Mr Brennan said speed limits could only be introduced on public roads and not in private estates.
Mr Brennan said that the design of new estates meant the roads were more narrow and had less long stretches which would not lend to speeding.
