Sceptical about Constituency commission report 2017
As an Independent candidate in the last General Election, I feel quite sceptical about the balance in the proposals contained in the latest Constituency Commission Report. Looking at the extra seats awarded to the general Dublin Region, I think that this government has succeeded in getting its wishes met. Right across Ireland, it looks as if almost guaranteed seats are being prepared for FG candidates, in particular. Sligo-Leitrim has lost West Cavan, but gained the Boyle area of North Roscommon. This shuffling has confirmed people thinking that the rural West hardly matters and its candidates and TDs are tolerated just to make up the numbers.
I’m asking is this yet another gerrymander?
The only consoling thought is that the “Tullymander” of more than forty years ago failed in its objective. Maybe, this time, the West’s awake.
Yours Sincerely,
Cllr Des Guckian, Dromod, Co Leitrim.
