Gormley praises playground action group

-

COUNCILLOR Margaret Gormley has paid tribute to the community in Tubbercurry who fought to have their playground re-opened.

The playground was opened a number of weeks ago following a long running campaign.

It was initially closed in 2013 due to health and safety concerns.

‘Pairc Cairde’ in Tubbercurry re-opened in May, and Cllr. Gormley says the playground is of huge importance to the local community.

“I am delighted that the children’s playground in Tubbercurry has finally re-opened after it was closed four years ago on health and safety grounds,” she said.

“This is a community playground. Parents had to take their children to other venues including taking them to playgrounds outside the county,” she added.

She went on to pay tribute to the members of the community who started the campaign to re-open the playground, and those who helped in some way along the line.

“I raised this matter on numerous occasions and met with the CEO Shaun Purcell of MSLETB on site a number of times, and I want to personally thank him for the help and support he gave to ensure it would be reopened.

“I also want to pay tribute to the small committee who recognising the need for this community facility took on the task stuck with it, organised fundraising events and today there is a facility for the children that everybody is proud of.

“I also want to acknowledge the help of Sligo Co Council and the area engineer David Golden.”

The group did a huge amount of fundraising by themselves, while also receiving funding from numerous different sources.

“Funding came from the town and village fund and Clár together with the local contribution,” said Councillor Gormley.

She has since been to visit the playground since it’s re-opening.

“It was great to visit it with the President of the Chamber of Commerce Geraldine Brennan who also played an important role in its re-opening.”
