The Sligo Champion

We always knew Leitrim would be tough says Henry

-

AFTER the full-time whistle in Mac Hale Park on Sunday afternoon, ecstatic Sligo ladies manager Paddy Henry was congratulating his team on their brilliant back-to-back win. He was beaming from ear to ear and it was rightly so as the Sligo side showed determination to get across the line against tricky opponents in Leitrim.

The Tourlestrane man told the Sligo Champion: “I’m feeling great! Relieved really. It was a tough game like every game and we knew it was going to be tough because they are always a tough team to beat. “The first half was even enough I suppose and the wind in the second half helped us along,” the manager explained.

“We got a few scores and we got away from them.”

He praised his side for not panicking in the second half when Leitrim took the lead.

“We never panicked and we knew there was another kick in it and that was how it worked out really.” Paddy said to score 3-15 in any game was impressive. “I thought when Elaine O’Reilly came in and kicked two great points from thirty or forty yards out were killing points you know.

“Overall I think we deserved it. We knew Leitrim were going to be tough.

“When you look at Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon, there’s nothing between them and it’s a battle all the time.”

Paddy said attention now switches to the Quarter Finals which have yet to be announced.

“We’ll see how it goes, we don’t know who we’re playing yet but we’re looking forward to a Quarter Final and see how it goes. It’s great having won two titles now in a row and this being our third year to get to the final, it’s nice to win two in a row.”

The manager was also praising captain Noelle Gormley who had a terrific game. “Noelle was unbelievable and she’s a brilliant player and it was a great team performance.

“I thought Bernice was outstanding too and Etna done her work, all the girls worked hard and that’s what it’s about, I’m very proud of them,” a delighted Paddy added.
