Cummins says troops ready for final

-

SLIGO minor manager David Cummins says they are looking forward to Sunday’s final with Galway in Pearse Stadium at 12pm.

They overcame a solid Leitrim side in Wednesday’s semi-final in Markievicz Park, a game that had six goals as Sligo came away with a five point win.

Cummins told the Sligo Champion: “The boys in fairness to them played well and the second half left it interesting for the crowd.

“Any game that has six goals is entertaining and I felt we played well overall,” he added.

The focus is very much on Sunday’s Connacht final with Galway with memories of the same final two years ago, which went to a replay and the Yeats men just coming up short.

Cummins says preparations are going well for the encounter in Salthill ahead of the Senior final.

“Preparations are going fine and everyone is fully fit thankfully.

“We will be meeting up two or three times this week.

“Because of the way of the draws, we only had ten days to prepare for this game.

“Before that we were focussed on Leitrim so it’s quite short to get ready for the next game,” he said.

Earlier in the year Sligo played Galway and came up short by just five points so it’s all to play for come Sunday.

Cummins praised the depth of his young panel, saying it’s more about a solid team display as opposed to singling out individuals.

“I think we have a very good close-knit bunch of young fellas as a team rather than as individuals.

“We have two players who can put in exceptional performances, like we did against Leitrim, and then there will be two different players the next day who will step up and put in the performance and that is good that we can call on those.

“There is nothing new in terms on injuries thankfully as we had enough throughout the year so everyone is looking forward to Sunday.”

Even though he wasn’t manager back two years ago, Cummins was very much involved.

“My son Darragh was on that team so I was keenly involved. “We had our chances to win that but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“I hope that we will have good support from Sligo on Sunday.

“I know we haven’t had too much of a lead in time but hopefully there will be a big Sligo support,” he added.

Throw-in to Sligo and Galway in the Connacht Minor final is 12pm on Sunday in Pearse Stadium.
