Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Seamus Kilgannon will officially open the 31st Summer School

-

The 31st South Sligo Summer School gets under way in Tubbercurry this Sunday evening, 9 th July at 7.30 pm at St Brigid’s Hall where the official opening will take place – everyone is invited to come along and get into the spirit of what promises to be a great week’s music, song and dance in South Sligo.

Once the summer school has been officially opened by the newly elected Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council. Cllr Seamus Kilgannon, the week’s musical activities will kick off with an informal session followed by the opening céilí with Swallows Tail in St Brigid’s Hall.

We are extremely lucky and privileged in South Sligo to have such a rich heritage of traditional music at the core of our identity and the calibre of tutors teaching at the South Sligo Summer School very much reflects this tradition. We are also delighted each year to include musicians and tutors from outside the South Sligo/North Connacht area in our programme. The blend of musicians, singers and dancers we have offering tuition and sharing their musical heritage, knowledge and expertise is second to none and the geographical spread and range of students attending the South Sligo Summer School year in year out is a testament to this. This year we are very much looking forward to welcoming a group of schoolchildren and their teachers from Switzerland, a group of dancers from Belarus, new attendees from South Korea, Taiwan, the United States and Japan among others and a group of Spanish students who are spending the month of July in Tubbercurry learning English and will attend the summer school as part of their course.

Members of the public are invited to attend our concerts, talks and céilís during the week. These events are open to all and for anyone lucky enough to be able to spend the week in Tubbercurry soaking up the atmosphere, you can be sure of making new friends, hearing great music and having loads of opportunities to dance your socks off !

For full details of our 2017 programme, please see our website www. sssschool.org where you will also find an accommodation list and get links to our social media/video clips and more information on all aspects of the summer school. Copies of our brochure are also available in all local shops and businesses and in Sligo Tourist Office on O’Connell Street – thank you to the staff there for giving us prime window space to advertise our summer school over the past few weeks.

The South Sligo Summer School can continue to grow and thrive only with the help, support and good will of the people of Tubbercurry, the local business community, our many volunteers and our sponsors. We are very grateful to the myriad of individuals, businesses and other community organisations who help us out both financially and in so many practical ways. Ár mbuíochas dhaoibh go léir. Bígí linn I dTobar a’ Choire ón 9ú – 15ú Iúil!
