Tubber welcomes internatio­nal visitors for 31st Summer School

THE 31st South Sligo Summer School kicked off on Sunday in Tubbercurr­y, with a jampacked week of events in store.

Visitors from places as far flung as South Africa, Argentina, Belarus, the UK and the USA came along to the opening of the event - which speaks volumes about the popularity of the South Sligo Summer School.

Ten Swiss children and their teachers were expected to start classes yesterday, five of whom will be attending the beginner harp class.

Twenty Spanish children and teenagers currently in Tubber learning English and staying with local families will be attending the summer school workshops for the week.

The event attracts tourists from all across the globe each year, bringing a huge volume of visitors to the South Sligo town for what has become a staple of the Sligo summer.

Today (Tuesday) sees the beginning of the ‘Harmonica Workshop (Key of G), which has been newly introduced for this year, and will be facilitate­d by Rick Epping.

There will be Sean Nós dancing, masterclas­ses and set dancing throughout the day.

Tomorrow ( Wednesday) sees Carmen Cullen, niece of ballad singer Delia Murphy present a tribute to her aunt, before the daily recitals and dancing, with classes continuing every morning from 10am until 1pm.

There will be an illustrate­d talk in St. Brigid’s Hall on ‘ The Uilleann Piping of North Connacht - Counties Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim’ on Thursday afternoon as the highlight of the day.

A lecture on ‘ The Music of Vincent Harrison - The Sligo/ New York Connection’ will take place in St. Brigid’s Hall on Friday afternoon, with a grand traditiona­l concert being hosted by Holy Family NS that evening.

A farewell open air session will bid farewell to the summer school on Saturday afternoon, along with a céilí later on.

This year, there will be half price entry to the concert on Friday night to young people under 18 and half price fees for the series of afternoon masterclas­ses during the week. This is in conjunctio­n with Music Generation Sligo.
