Calry tap water is like ‘Fanta’

-

RESIDENTS living in Fivemilebourne in Calry are putting up with Fanta - coloured water for the past three years.

“Three years is a long time to wait to drink water from your own tap,” said Councillor Thomas Healy.

He tabled a motion on the issue, urging the Council to write to Irish Water for an update report on when work is to start on a water mains in Fivemilebourne.

He brought a bottle of orange water into the chamber to show members the quality of tap water there.

“The last letter from Irish Water said they were going to carry out a survey,” he said.

“These people can’t drink it or use it for washing their clothes,” he added.

“Irish Water has admitted that the contamination of the water is caused by obsolete cast iron piping supplying the water.

“They have undertaken to replace the pipes but this has not been done yet,” he said.

He was supported by Cllr Chris MacManus who said the water looked “more like Fanta than water”.

“In the 21st century we still have incidents like this that have been highlighted and it’s just not acceptable,” he said.

Council Administrative Officer Kevin Colreavy told Cllr Healy that the Council emailed Irish Water on June 26 th about the matter.

“They have referred the query and will investigate it as soon as possible,” he said.
