CONGRATULATIONS to Ballymote/Bunninadden U 14 team and management who are Division 1 winners after beating St Mary’s last Friday in Markiecicz Park. This was a trilling game of football, Ballymote/Bunninadden spent most periods of the game in the leading position. COOLERA/STRANDHILL
UNDER 21 Hurling CONGRATULATIONS to the players and management of the Sligo U21 hurling panel who had a comprehensive victory over Louth in the All Ireland C Semi final. We had a very substantial representation on the panel, many of whom featured prominently on the day. We wish Kevin Banks, Ronan Redmond, Kieran Prior, Luke Comerford, Seán Callaghan, David Kilrehill, Thomas Moran, Seán Chambers, Shane Brennan and Fionn Morrissey the very best of luck when they play Donegal in the final in a couple of weeks. Congratulations to Ruth Goodwin, Laura-Ann Laffey and Jacqui Mulligan who were all on the Sligo Ladies team which defeated Leitrim in the Connacht Intermediate Final in Castlebar last Sunday week. Congrats Jacqui on being named Player of the Match. Sligo now progress on to the All-Ireland quarter final. Our under 9 and under 10 panels travelled to Shamrock Gaels last Wednesday to play the third round of matches. Once again they performed very well. Thank you to all who travelled and helped on the night. Our u16 boys defeated Ballymote/Bunannaddan in the Shield semi-final on Monday evening in Ransboro Park and will now play Eastern Harps in the final. A final Lee Wilson point ensured a 5-07 to 2-11 victory, despite a late fight-back by the visitors. One hundred and thirty children enjoyed the club Cúl Camp in Scarden last week. This was a fantastic number and is testament to all the work being done at underage in the club. A big thank you to Tommy Craddock who co-ordinated the camp and to all the coaches, many of whom were our young players, who made it such a successful event. The under 12 girls got their championship off to a winning start with a hard fought victory over St Molaise Gaels in Ransboro on Friday evening. This was a match which saw the lead change hands on a number of occasions, and was only decided in the final quarter when our girls out-scored the visitors by 2-03 to 1-00.
CLOONACOOL
CONGRATS to the U14 boys team who won the Shield county final last week in Scarden. Our Junior team went down to a strong Ballymote outfit at home at the weekend. This was a hard fought game all the way through and with a little more luck the result might have been closer. They are away to Easkey on Saturday evening next at 7.30pm. Training continues during the week and every available player is encouraged to make every effort to attend as championship preparations get underway. The U16 team have qualified for the final of the league which will be played in the coming days. We wish them the best of luck in this game. Well done to the Sligo ladies Intermediate team and their manager Paddy Henry on their great success on winning the Connacht Intermediate title at MacHale Park Castlebar on Sunday week last. We wish them well in the All-Ireland series. Hard luck to the Sligo minor team who lost to Galway in the Connacht minor final played on Sunday last in Pearse Stadium in Galway. We are represented on the panel by Oisín Grehan and Conal Ryan. The best of luck in their next game Team managers are asked to note that all notes for publication are to be with the clubs PRO Tom Towey by Saturday evening at the latest, for the following week.
ST MOLAISE GAELS
WELL done to our U14 Boys winners of the A League Shield following a good win against Curry in Scarden on Friday night last. On the same evening our Minor Boys secured a semi final spot in the A League following an impressive 4-12 to 1-08 win away to Eastern Harps. It was heartbreak though for our U16 Boys when an injury time goal saw Tubbercurry prevail in a thrilling A League semi final at Monsignor Hynes Park on Monday July 3rd. FInal score Tubbercurry 2-09 St Molaise Gaels 2-08. Disappointment also for our U12 Girls beaten 5-06 to 5-03 by Coolera/ Strandhill in the first round of fixtures in the A Championship. Our senior men were beaten 2-14 to 0-06 by Tourlestrane in the Kiernan Cup final at Corran Park Ballymote on Saturday morning last. Our U10 Boys travelled to Donegal Town on Saturday last to take part in a Blitz and acquitted themselves very well against some big clubs from Donegal, Monaghan, Tyrone and Fermanagh. This Saturday we bring three U10 teams to Ballyshannon to compete in the Mick Shannon Tournament. This Tuesday evening July 11th our two Boys U12 squads are way to Ballymote/Bunninadden at 7.00pm. Friday night July 14th sees a top of the table clash in the Division IV League at Monsignor Hynes Park as our Junior men’s squad currently in second place entertain league leaders and neighbours Drumcliffe/Rosses Point with an 8.00pm throw in. Underage coaching continues Saturday mornings. The Club are running a Summer Camp over three days from July 17th to 19th for Boys and Girls up to 13 years of age. Camp will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm each day and cost is 25 euro per child. Our annual “Cash for Clobber” fundraiser coincides with the return of underage coaching. If anyone has old clothes and footwear that they don’t need the Club would be delighted to take these. Goods can be left at the Club rooms on any Saturday morning. This year’s Kellogs Cúl Camp takes place at Monsignor Hynes Park from July 24th to 28th. Bookings can be done online at www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie. Co-ordinator for our Camp is Jimmy McLoughlin at 087-3915055.
ST MARY’S
IT was a very busy week’s football in the club and at the start of the week we had high hopes of success in finals at U14 age group for both our girls and boys. Unfortunately it was not to be and despite great performances we have to await another day. Our younger players did bring a trophy home, when the U10 panel won in Donegal. On Saturday last our Under 10/11 squad travelled to Donegal town to participate in the Four Masters tournament. In splendid sunshine our teams enjoyed a great day’s football with our Under 11 team unlucky when losing out in their shield final by one point while our Under 10 team were victorious in all five games and won their plate competition. Our thanks to Pauric Harvey and the Four Masters club for inviting us to compete, and the warm hospitality afforded to all teams. We had heroic performances from both squads and it was a very proud Roghan O’ Neill who accepted the plate on behalf of the Under 10 panel. Our U14 girls played hot favourites Calry in the A league final and despite a heroic performance which saw our girls 5 points to the good at half time, a revitalised Calry side grabbed the initiative after the break and took the honours. The team can be rightly proud of their league campaign which saw consistently improving performances with each outing, and this final will give the girls the belief to push on for the Championship. St Marys juniors hosted Easkey on Saturday night in division 3. Played in great spirit, St Mary’s ran out comfortable winners. A number of the minor panel got their opportunity to play competitive football at adult level. Michael Kilcoyne started and Cian Muldowney and Donal Fidgeon came on and had their chance to impress at this level. It was a chance also for Mark McGoldrick to get some game time after his recent injury set back. At full time Marys lead 5-18 0-8. On Wednesday evening the Minor Girls had their first championship game vs Owenmore Gaels away. In what was a very competitive game Owenmore Gaels were leading at half-time with a scoreline of 4-9 to 2-3. In the second half the St.Marys girls pulled it together and began to dominate all over the pitch. The final score was 5-11 to 5-8 in favour of Owenmore Gaels. Even though the girls didn’t come away with the win they can hold their heads high as they did themselves proud with their performance and self-discipline. Special mention to the u16 girls who played and were fantastic throughout. Next championship match will be on Wed 19th of July vs Geevagh/St.Michaels in Kent Park. The ladies senior team began their intermediate championship on Sunday morning with a 14 point win. With only 4 players who began the county final last year starting, this was a step into the unknown for this team. There were 9 championship debutants in adult football on the day with Karen Lynch, Leah Rooney, Aoife Gilroy, Ali Dykes, Hannah Monaghan, Tammy McGwynn, Cecille Mourin, Karen Morgan and Michaela Gaffney each giving a great display. This was a real team performance and gets the group stage off to a great start. Final score was 4-13 to 1-8. Next up will be Tourlestrane.
OWENMORE GAELS
HARD luck to Roland Anderson, James Duffy and the County Minors after there loss to Galway on Sunday. Best of luck in the Quarter finals. The Minor Boys final league game against Shamrock Gaels was postponed again last Friday. The match was refixed for Monday 10th of July in Connolly Park with a league semi final and a place in the A championship to play for, check the club Facebook page for results. The ladies team took on St. Marys on Sunday morning in a wet Connolly Park as the ladies intermediate championship got underway. In what was difficult conditions the ladies represented themselves well but the absence of some personnel made the challenge more difficult and they fell to a strong St Mary’s side. Well done to the minor girls, superb performance in an exciting game against St. Marys on Wednesday evening to win out on a 5-11 to 5-8 scoreline. The Senior Men face Bunnninadden away on Sunday in a game that could guarantee division two status for next season. Throw in at 5.30pm. All support greatly appreciated. For all upcoming underage and Senior Owenmore Gaels fixtures, visit www.owenmoregaels.ie/calender Owenmore Gaels is delighted to announce our Golf Scramble Competition at Castle Dargan Golf Course. DRUMCLIFFE/ROSSES POINT
COMMISERATIONS to our club player Jack McLoughlin and the Sligo minor footballers who were beaten by Galway in last Sunday’s Connacht minor football at Salthill. The summer is still alive for the team as they now prepare for an All-Ireland quarter-final against the Ulster champions (Derry/Cavan). There was all-Ireland glory for two of our girls U16 footballers at the weekend. Sophie McDonagh and Tara Donohoe are part of the Sligo U16 team which lifted the All-Ireland ‘C’ title in Kinnegad last Saturday after beaten Westmeath in the final. Congrats to all involved. Good luck to our boys U16 footballers who host Owenmore Gaels in their Division 3 league semi-final at Oxfield this Monday evening at 7pm. Benbulben Gaels minor hurlers play their re-arranged and inaugural championship match against Tourlestrane/Curry on Tuesday evening at 7pm. This is the first time that the club has fielded an U18 hurling team in the Sligo championship and so the match marks an important milestone in the ongoing development of hurling at DRP. Our ladies intermediate footballers begin their club championship campaign for 2017 this Sunday morning (16th) when they travel to south Sligo to play CT Gaels in their opening group game at 10am. We’re in a three-time group along with Calry/ St Joseph’s whom we play on July 30th. We wish the players and manager Mike Healy the very best of luck. The senior men’s footballers resume their Furey’s Coaches Division 1 league campaign this Sunday afternoon with a trip to Gurteen to play Eastern Harps at 1pm. This is our penultimate league match and we need one more win from our two remaining matches to be sure of avoiding the drop to Division 2. Our Junior men’s footballer have an important league match in Division 4 on Friday evening when they travel to Monsignor Hynes Park in Grange to play neighbours St Molaise Gaels at 8pm. A member of that team, Conor Kenny from Rosses Point, gave a powerful interview on RTÉ Radio last week, sharing his experiences of working as a Doctor aboard the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) boat, MV Aquarius, in the Mediterranean earlier this year, to provide care for some of those affected by the ongoing migrant crisis. You can listen back to the interview by visiting the club’s Facebook page.
