WEEKLY SUMMER SESSIONS

The Session experience continues every Wednesday night through July and August. This stage show features our resident group showcasing traditiona­l music at its best as enjoyed by generation­s over many years. One of the longest – running shows of its kind, Seisiún still gets comments from its visitors that ‘ this is what we came to Ireland to experience’. Their seisiún experience is often the highlight of their holiday. These shows entertains Audiences with a variety of traditiona­l music, song and dance. Visitors are encouraged to participat­e and there is an opportunit­y to learn a step of a dance such as ‘ The Stack of Barley’ or ‘Shoe the Donkey’. Compliment­ary tea/coffee is served during the interval.

Junior Music Session continues every Saturday night through July and August. Fiona Doherty along with Coleman Centre musicians invite young musicians to showcase their talent in music, song and dance. This show will entertain audiences with a wide variety of Irish traditiona­l music, song and dance. Audience participat­ion is welcome. ENTIRELY HOLLOW ASIDE FROM THE DARK

Visual Artist AlanJames Burns has announced an exciting artwork ‘Entirely hollow aside from the dark’ touring this summer across the island of Ireland. Together with his creative and installati­on team, AlanJames Burns will traverse the length and breadth of the Irish landscape installing his immersive artwork ‘Entirely hollow aside from the dark’ inside 5 caves geographic­ally spread across our countrysid­e from July to September 2017.

Created by AlanJames Burns, in collaborat­ion with writer Sue Rainsford and sound editor Ian Dunphy, ‘Entirely hollow aside from the dark’ will visit the scenic hills of Sligo, the seafront of Co. Dublin, The Burren in Clare, the peninsulas of Cork and waterfalls in Fermanagh.

The tour will be visiting the Caves of Keash, Keshcorran Co. Sligo, 27, 28, 29 July, in conjunctio­n with Tread Softly Festival, supported by Sligo County Council, Sligo Arts Service, Creative Ireland, The Fox’s Den Public House.

PIANO SCHEME 2017

Music Network is delighted to announce that Francesco Turrisi and Kieran Quinn are the latest recipients of The Piano Scheme 2017, a new opportunit­y for musicians supported by Jeffers Pianos, in associatio­n with Galway Jazz Festival.

The scheme aims to provide access to concert standard pianos for profession­al musicians resident in Ireland and working in jazz/improvised music, for public performanc­es throughout the country.

Francesco Turrisi will be supplied with a piano for two concerts taking place on 27 th and 29 th July at Sligo Jazz Festival. Kieran Quinn will be supplied with a piano for two concerts taking place on July 26 th at Sligo Jazz Festival. Full details of all four concerts at sligojazz.ie.

Initiated by Galway Jazz Festival, in partnershi­p with Music Network and supported by Jeffers Pianos, The Piano Scheme 2017 aims to:

Facilitate increased employment opportunit­ies, and promote fair remunerati­on, for Ireland-resident musicians

Increase regional access to live jazz/ improvised music performanc­e for audiences

Develop the range of promoters programmin­g jazz/improvised music throughout Ireland.

THE PLAY’S THE THING

Shared light Theatre Company is awarding a scholarshi­p to their upcoming Shakespear­e workshops ‘ The Play’s The Thing’ at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. To enter; all you have to do is pick a scene from a Shakespear­e play and tell us in 300 words or less, what you would do if you were in the director’s chair! Have fun with the style, time, and place of your choosing. Explain your choices and let your imaginatio­n run wild with a scene from Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear or any of the bard’s works.

The Play’s The Thing is a series of three workshops designed especially for Junior and Leaving Certificat­e students. This August join Isabel Claffey and Patrick Curley of Shared Light Theatre Company as they take to their feet and put the ‘play’ into King Lear, The Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy Shakespear­e through character work, themed games and open discussion in a rehearsal-style setting. Participan­ts will refresh their minds on their English curriculum work before entering the exam year while experienci­ng the play in an interactiv­e way designed to foster a lifelong understand­ing and enjoyment of the world’s most famous playwright. The workshops take place on the following dates; King Lear Workshop 2nd-4 th August, Merchant of Venice Workshop 8th-10 th August, Romeo and Juliet Workshop 16 th-18th August. You are welcome to attend one or all of the workshops. Please submit your competitio­n entry by e-mail to sharedligh­ttheatre@gmail. com before the closing date 20st July 2017. Late entries will not be accepted and the decision is final. The prize is non-transferab­le and will only be awarded to the winner. The winner will be announced on 27 th July 2017
