SAD PASSING

The recent peaceful death occurred after a brief illness of Kevin Kirrane, late of Drumartin, Aclare. Aged just 59, Kevin was son of the late Johnny and Mary Kirrane, and a member of a well known and respected local family in the Aclare area.

After finishing school in the mid-70s, Kevin became involved with his father’s business of machinery work and agricultural contracting throughout south Sligo.

As well as doing the seasonal farm contract work of hay, silage and land upgrading, Kevin also got involved with road development and general upgrading work for Coillte Teo, the State forestry company.

Many of the access roads and general facilities associated with the forestry development on the Ox Mountains and in various other parts of Co. Sligo were done by Kevin and his team.

One of the amenities he worked on in the Tubbercurry area was the laying of the footpath through the forestry at the rear of Rathscanlon Creamery.

This forest walk is an excellent local amenity, and Kevin took great pride in the finished product. Indeed, he was eagerly anticipating and awaiting the development of an extension to the present walk, an extension which is hoped for at some stage in the future.

A very important part of Kevin’s business was Geraldine, his wife. However, as well as his wife, Geraldine was very much involved in the administration and pricing of his work and any one of them was rarely seen socially without the other.

Kevin was a quiet spoken and gentle man, who often helped others quietly and without any fuss. He will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, daughter Claire, sons Stephen, Kieran, and Brian, son and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sister Maureen, brothers JP and Vincent, various in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and a large circle of friends.

His remains reposed at the Brennan funeral homes and at his own home with funeral Mass in Tourlestrane. Burial took place in Kilmactigue Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

SOUTH SLIGO SUMMER SCHOOL

The 31st annual South Sligo summer school took place in Tubbercurry, July 9 to July 15 last, and was a tremendous success. Hundreds of students attended classes throughout the town including various traditional musical instruments, singing, and dancing. Students attended from as far away as China, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, the US and various European countries.

After classes were over, recitals and ceilis were held in evening time and pubs were alive to the sound of top quality impromptu sessions. Well done to the organising committee and their various helpers for another successful school. Many people are already looking forward to next year’s event.
