SLIGO SUMMER FESTIVAL

The Sligo Summer Festival takes place from August 10 th - August 12 th at Stephen Street car park. Thursday sees Kieran Quinn and guests hit the stage, with The Blizzards and Aslan performing on the Saturday. Sunday’s main act is yet to be announced.

SLIGO JAZZ FESTIVAL

This year’s Sligo Jazz Festival boasts a stellar line up which runs for an action packed six days, 25-30 July. Proceeding­s kick off with a bang in Hargadons of O’Connell Street on 25 th July at 4:30pm as MOBO Award nominee drummer David Lyttle is joined by Russian bass virtuoso Anton Davidyants, UK guitarist Mike Walker and others for a powerhouse session of jazz standards in Sligo’s most intimate venue.

The free-admission Hargadons session takes place each day from Tuesday to Saturday at 4:30 in the afternoon, with a different act each day, and with it the unique atmosphere created by the arrival of 100+ attendees at Sligo Jazz Project’s Internatio­nal Summer School, which takes place at IT Sligo for the duration of the festival.

THE PLAY’S THE THING

Shared light Theatre Company is awarding a scholarshi­p to their upcoming Shakespear­e workshops ‘ The Play’s The Thing’ at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. To enter; all you have to do is pick a scene from a Shakespear­e play and tell us in 300 words or less, what you would do if you were in the director’s chair! Have fun with the style, time, and place of your choosing. Explain your choices and let your imaginatio­n run wild with a scene from Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, King Lear or any of the bard’s works.

The Play’s The Thing is a series of three workshops designed especially for Junior and Leaving Certificat­e students. This August join Isabel Claffey and Patrick Curley of Shared Light Theatre Company as they take to their feet and put the ‘play’ into King Lear, The Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy Shakespear­e through character work, themed games and open discussion in a rehearsal-style setting. Participan­ts will refresh their minds on their English curriculum work before entering the exam year while experienci­ng the play in an interactiv­e way designed to foster a lifelong understand­ing and enjoyment of the world’s most famous playwright. The workshops take place on the following dates; King Lear Workshop 2nd-4 th August, Merchant of Venice Workshop 8th-10 th August, Romeo and Juliet Workshop 16 th-18th August. You are welcome to attend one or all of the workshops. Please submit your competitio­n entry by e-mail to sharedligh­ttheatre@gmail.com before the closing date of 30 th July 2017. Late entries will not be accepted and the decision is final. The prize is non-transferab­le and will only be awarded to the winner.

Lissadell House is hosting a Specialist

Plant Fair on Saturday 22nd July 11am

- 5pm in the Visitor Centre Courtyard.

There is free entry to the Plant Fair, Free parking and Free entry to the CaToCa tearooms. Normal admission prices apply for visiting Lissadell House and Gardens and Exhibition galleries. With specialist nurseries from all over Ireland attending this is a great opportunit­y to stock up on plants not available in Garden Centres and get advice on where to plant and how to care for them. Nurseries, Leamore Nurseries, Caherhurle­y Nurseries and Pontoon Nurseries.

Plan a day out and visit the exquisite Alpine Garden perched above the Atlantic and see the great progress made in restoring the Victorian Kitchen Garden. Enjoy a guided tour of Lissadell House on the hour 11am - 5pm with one of our expert guides and take your time to explore the new 1916 exhibition, Markeivicz and

Yeats galleries before relaxing with some afternoon tea in the CaToca Tearooms.

CHERISH THE LADIES

Cherish the Ladies, the all female super group, will perform at the O’Carolan Harp Festival on Sunday, 6 th August, 2017 in St. Ronan’s Hall. The group began a concert series in New York in January, 1985, the brainchild of Mick Moloney, who wanted to showcase the brightest female musicians in America in what had been a male dominated scene. The group took its name from a traditiona­l Irish jig called ‘Cherish the Ladies’.
