Memorial Mass for Lady Mountbatten
A special memorial mass for Lady Patricia Mountbatten will take place in Mullaghmore this Saturday evening.
She died peacefully at home in Mersham, Kent, on 13th of June at the age of 93 and was buried on 27 th of June.
Born Patricia Mountbatten, the Countess was Prince Philip’s first cousin and the daughter of Earl Mountbatten, who was killed by the IRA in Mullaghmore in 1979, along with her 14-year-old son Nicholas Knatchbull.
The mass in Mullaghmore will take place in Star of the Sea Church at 6.30pm.
Fr Christy McHugh will celebrate the mass.
Lady Mountbatten was remembered with fondness by former Classie Bawn staff and locals alike when her death was announced in June.
“The mass on Saturday is a chance for her friends and locals to pay their respects to the Countess,” said son of the former Classie Bawn housekeeper John Barry to The Sligo Champion. “Her friends wanted to pay their respects and all the local people who knew her,” he said.
The Mayor of Sligo Municipal District Councillor Hubert Keaney and other dignitaries are expected to attend.
When the Countess’ death was announced, Prince Charles paid tribute to his “very special godmother, Lady Mountbatten.” “She played an extremely important part in my life and I shall miss her presence most dreadfully,” he said.
