Worst fears realised
THE frustrations of members of Sligo Corporation over the Connaughton Road situation was all too clear back in September 1985, as this report reveals:
“Cllr. Tony McLoughlin said he had asked some time ago what the purpose of the road was and the engineers laughed at him. Now his worst fears had come to pass with caravans parked all over the place. It was a disgrace that this was allowed to happen, he complained.
“He said the car park was a very fine one but people were afraid to use it and neither the road nor the car park would ever be used as long as the present problem existed. The Corporation should take positive action without any further delay.
Cllr. Kay McGoldrick maintained that the number of itinerant families using the car park had been reduced to two some weeks ago but now there were quite a lot of families there and she wondered why the itinerants had been allowed back in.
Connaughton Road and car park had been developed at an enormous cost and it was now used as a halting site.
People living nearby were going through a terrible ordeal and they wanted to know what the Corporation were going to do to solve the problem.
