THE owner of a piebald pony who he left for weeks in pain from untreated neck wounds has paid ¤500 to a local animal sanctuary.

Charles Ward (50) of Elm Gardens, Ballytivnan admitted on June 15 th to causing unnecessary suffering to a piebald colt at the Clarion Road on January 26 th 2015 and with failing to take all necessary steps to ensure it was kept and treated in a manner which safeguarded its health and welfare.

Last week, his solicitor Mr Gerard McGovern handed up the ¤500 to the court.

“This is where a horse’s neck got infect- ed from a bite from another horse and my client didn’t treat it,” he told Judge Kevin Kilrane.

Judge Kilrane convicted and fined Ward a further ¤200 and ordered the ¤500 to go to the Sathya Sai Donkey Sanctuary in Castlebaldwin. The pony made a full recovery and has since been re-homed.
