New burial ground hopes

-

THERE are hopes in Monasteraden that land could be sourced for a new cemetery, the Municipal Authority meeting was told.

The matter was raised by Councillor Margaret Gormley who said there were no spaces left in the cemetery.

She said she was aware of some cases recently where families had to bury their loved ones elsewhere and this was causing great upset in the area.

“The council needs to look for a site urgently. It’s full and people are having to go to other graveyards which is causing distress,” she said.

Cllr Paul Taylor said he understood a site close to the cemetery had been identified by the local graveyard committee and that some progress was being made.

Senior Engineer, Paddy Hughes said he wasn’t aware of a viable site in the proximity of the present graveyard but he would welcome if one had been identified.

Cllr Gormley said the issue needed to come to a head and that it was no longer tolerable.

She said had a expectation that they would be allowed bury their beloved close to them.
