32nd Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival – celebrating Irish culture and heritage
THE Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival opens on Saturday 5 th August and runs up to the highlight of the Festival – The Old Fair Day on Wednesday 9th August. This is a fiveday festival, with something for all the family to enjoy in the South Sligo Town.
The Festival is in its 32nd year and the committee, all of whom are voluntary, have worked tirelessly to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The festival opens on Saturday 5 th August with the Battle for the Headers Cup soccer competition, while the children will be entertained at a Teddy Bear’s picnic in the Forest Walk hosted by Lollipop Lane Creche & Montessori.
On Sunday 6th Surlis Supervalu kindly return for their 6th year sponsoring the Family Fun Day, with marquees full of food tasting, free entertainment which includes Supervalu Arts & Crafts Marquee, Face Painting, Colouring Competitions, Fancy Dress Competitions, Pottery Workshop, Supervalu Food Tasting, Fun Races & Games, Art Workshop, Juggling Workshop, Tractor Pull and many more activities for everyone. You can rock the day away with DJ Shane Walsh, have fun on the Bouncy Castles, Fun Fair Rides, meet your favourite Cartoon Character, get free Ballons, test your Golf & Football skills, courtesy of Tubbercurry Golf Club and Tubbercurry G.A.A. You can also take part in the Fastest Lap Competition. The good news is that on Sunday 6th , everything is free to all the family with the exception of the Bouncy Castle & the Fun Fair Rides. You can also visit Bank of Ireland marquee, where they will present a CoderDojo workshop and fun activities.
Tuesday 8th sees the local Chamber of Commerce host a Pride of Place Display, which will showcase the Community & Businesses. This will take place in the Square. There is children’s street art, a children’s matinee in the hall and a very popular Treasure Hunt in the Square at 5pm.
Then the highlight of the festival is of course The Old Fair Day on Wednesday 9th. From 9am, you can experience all aspects of Irish Heritage & Crafts, such as Traditional Irish Crafts Pottery, Ironmongery, Thatching, Haymaking, Rush Work, Bread Making, Basket Weaving, Farrier, Making Musical Instruments, Wood Turning, Glass Blowing, Boxty Making, Butter Making and much more. There will also be Motor & Vehicle Displays and Hosts of Exhibitors of Artisan Foods & Breads.
Live on stage from1.30pm is Shane McGowan & Friends and at 3.15pm will be Lee Matthews & His Band. This is one of the longest running festivals and is probably unique in so far as Sunday events and the Old Fair Day on Wednesday are free to everyone young and old.
