This game was only decided in the second half of extra time with both sides out on their feet on a fine warm evening. Bill Cartys and David Currans team can hold their heads high after a fine league competition which went down to the wire. The Minor team went down to Owenmore Gaels in the Shield final in Scarden after a comprehensive win over Ballymote/ Bunnanadden in the semi-final. Our Juniors short a number of regulars suffered defeat against a good Enniscrone/ Kilglass team on Sunday last at home. MINOR Final

OUR minor side played in the Division 2 League final on Thursday night in Bunninadden vs Tourlestrane. Conditions for both teams were far from ideal with heavy showers of rain leaving plenty of surface water on the pitch. Coolera/Strandhill recovered from a Round 1 defeat to Tourlestrane to put together 6 straight wins along with a semi final victory over Coolaney/Mullinabreena. Tourlestrane recorded an impressive 7 out of 7 and a convincing semi final victory en route to the final, putting up some big score lines along the way. A task that was going to be difficult was made harder for our lads who were down a number of important players due to injury and summer holidays. Despite an impressive opening 15mins holding Tourlestrane to a single point, a lapse of concentration coupled with a fantastic individual goal was quickly followed by some quick fire points leaving Coolera/Strandhill with a big task to climb in the second half. Coolera/Strandhill as a team never let their work rate drop and their application for the duration of the game can not be faulted. Some excellent individual pieces of play in defence from Marc Harkin and Sean Wynne were pleasing while Sean Murphy covered every inch of the pitch showing some excellent skills in both defence and attack. U16s Keelan Harte and Lee Wilson can also be pleased with their contribution. We wish our 6 U16s all the best in their own league final on Sunday. As a group, management and players can now re group and focus on championship. They will welcome back the eight players that were unavailable to them for the league final and hope to have a successful run in championship. All support was appreciated and we look forward to seeing everyone out for championship.

CLUB Summer Camp FOLLOWING the success of the GAA Cúl Camp our own club Summer Camp sponsored by New Ireland Assurance will be held at Ransboro from August 8th-11th for all 6-12 year olds. Further details and bookings can be got from Tommy Cradock on 0877866845.

UNDER 12 Girls

THE under 12 girls got back to winning ways with a win over Shamrock Gaels in Ransboro last Friday. The girls settled into the game early and led at quarter time 3-02 to 0-00. They continued this good form for the second quarter adding another 3-01 to their opponents’ 0-02. It was a lead they never gave up, despite a strong showing from Shamrock Gaels in the third and fourth quarters, which saw the visitors score 3-01 to Coolera-Strandhill’s 1-02. By full time, the girls were to emerge victorious by 8-07 to 3-03. There were many fine individual displays, notably from Ava Griffin in goals, Anna McDaniel, Nessa O’ Sullivan and Lisa Kilfeather in defence, Orna Murphy and Mary-Kate McPartland in midfield and Clodagh Martyn, Ellen Walsh, Alana Wilson and Lauren Healy in attack; but what was more encouraging was the teamwork and link play that became evident as the game progressed. The girls have a tough assignment this Friday when they play C.T. Gaels in Ransboro at 7.00.

ALL-IRELAND Final

THERE was disappointment for our club’s representatives, Kevin Banks, Kieran Prior, Luke Comerford, David Kilrehill, Thomas Moran, Ronan Redmond, Seán Callaghan, Shane Brennan, Fionn Morrissey and Seán Chambers in the All-Ireland U21 Hurling Final in Markievicz Park on Saturday evening. Despite a strong second half which saw Sligo claw back a five point deficit to level the tie mid-way through the second half, Donegal went on to win 1-14 to 0-12.

U14 Boys

OUR under 14 boys had their first Championship outing away to Shamrock Gaels on Friday night and after a gutsy display the home team came out on top by 6 points. Playing without several regulars and bolstered by under 12s Tadgh Dogget and Oran Harte, Coolera were quick out of the blocks with an Andrew Lynch point. Ciaran Langan’s towering presence proved a handful for the Gaels’ defence as he helped himself to a brace of goals. Jamie Kilfeather was provider for the initial effort and he himself pointed for a rare score from distance. Mark McDaniel had a point from play after a fine link up with Jamie Walsh. He then netted a superb effort to give Coolera/Strandhill a six point cushion at the break. Aided by the breeze in the second half, the home side began to dominate and but for some heroic goalkeeping from Cathal Morahan they would have put the game to bed midway through the half. A great penalty block unfortunately fell kindly to the kicker and he made no mistake second time. The always dangerous Ciaran Langan raised another green flag and a fine midfield catch by Liam Gilligan initiated a Cormac Henaghan point. The Seafield county squad member helped himself to another point followed by three fine scores by Mark McDaniel...however some fine scores from the home team were enough to keep the visitors at bay. Other hardworking efforts came from Naoise Brennan, Ben Cawley, Rory Kinane and Owen Mc Kirdy. Up front Cathal Ballantyne and Cormac Correria showed up willingly. Next game is against St Michael’s in two weeks time. MINOR Girls

THE minor girls began their championship campaign with a tough assignment away to a very strong St. Farnan’s side last Wednesday. The home side were dominant from the start and ran out comfortable winners. Despite the result, there were many positives to take from the match, not least of which were the performances of the under 14s Amy Hampson and Beibhinn Harte. Amy was tenacious in defence, and Beibhinn, having started the game in goals and made many fine saves, ended up top scorer with 1-01 to her name in the second half. Eimear McCallion contributed 1-00, while Ellen Prior and Attracta Halloran had two points each. There were good performances in defence also from Caoimhe O’ Sullivan, Cara Gilligan and Kaela Kerrigan, while in attack Eilis Callaghan and Gráinne Redmond worked hard from start to finish. Next is a home match with Curry this Wednesday. Junior Football A depleted junior team played host to Molaise Gaels on Friday evening in round 9 of the Div. 4 League. A bright opening resulted in an Eoin Macken goal and John Kilrehill point giving us a slender lead in the early part of the half. The visitors responded however and picked off some nice long range points before netting from a quick free. Coolera-Strandhill battled their way back into contention thanks to points from Adam Kerrigan, Alan Scanlon and a second from John Kilrehill to leave the half time score 1-10 to 1-04 in favour of Molaise Gaels. The second half began with the visitors picking up where they left off, scoring some long range points. John Kilrehill and Adam Kerrigan had two excellent scores to keep Coolera-Strandhill in touch. Martin Gillen added another followed quickly by a Barry Doyle effort, before Barry drilled the ball low to the corner for the home side’s last score. It wasn’t enough however and Molaise Gaels went on to win 3-21 to 2-08.

DRUMCLIFFE/ROSSES POINT

THE club’s 2017 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp last week attracted a record 174 children to Oxfield. It was a terrific week of GAA activity and fun despite the occasional weather interruption. Sincere thanks to our local Cúl Camp coordinator and her team of club volunteersMary Power for steering the ship with calmness and composure all week. Particular thanks also go to Sligo GAA’s Benny Kenny and his vast team of coaches who guided (and entertained) the kids with distinction all week.

A blistering second-half display by our boys U16 footballers saw them overpower a gallant St John’s team last Monday evening’s in Scarden to lift the Division 3 league title for 2017. The team overturned a five-point half-time deficit and ran out winners by 7-19 to 3-9 with midfielder Eoghan Smith contributing 2-10. Well done to the players and the management team of Des Henry, Jimmy Smith & Niall Collery.

THE junior men’s footballers have finished top of Division 4 and have qualified for the league final following a 1-11 to 0-10 win at home to Castleconnor last Saturday. The victory completes a 100 percent record in the league with nine wins from nine matches. We are still awaiting confirmation of our league final opponents. The team will also compete in the Junior ‘B’ Championship, which starts next month. OUR senior men’s footballers host Curry next Sunday afternoon (30th) at Oxfield in their final Division 1 match of the season. Throw-in is at 1pm. A draw or better will ensure our top flight status for next season.

OUR ladies intermediate footballers have a vital home championship match the same day against Calry/St Joseph’s. They need a win to qualify for the county semi-finals. Throw-in at Oxfield on Sunday is at 10am. OUR minor ladies footballers made a winning start to the group stages of their ‘A’ championship campaign last Wednesday with a 4-8 to 1-10 win away to Eoghan Rua. Four days later they played Eastern Haps at Oxfield and put up a spirited display before eventually going down on a final scoreline of 2-12 to 3-5. The games come thick and fast tor the minors. They host Tourlestrane in their next group match at Oxfield this Wednesday evening at 7pm. OUR promising girls U12 team had an impressive win last Friday evening in the championship against Tourlestrane. The boys U14 footballers began their ‘A’ championship campaign the same evening with a comprehensive victory over St Farnan’s/St Pat’s at Oxfield.

OUR boys U12 football teams play Coolera/Strandhill this Tuesday evening.

THE Benbulben Gaels minor hurlers host Tourlestrane at Oxfield in the U18 championship on Thursday evening at 7pm while the U14 hurlers travel to play Tubbecurry/Cloonacool, also in the championship, the same evening. ENNISCRONE/ KILGLASS

INTERMEDIATE

OUR intermediate team defeated Cloonacool in the final round of the league last Sunday, 3-11 to 0-6. Three points up at half time, 0-7 to 0-4, the lads powered on after the break to secure the result. They now face into the league final next Sunday when they play Ballymote. No time or venue was available at the time of writing – keep an eye out locally for details. This is a huge game for the squad and management so please get out to support the team as they try to win the title. Best of luck to everyone involved. U-16

THE U-16 team are joining with Easkey for the championship and get their campaign underway on July 31st against Ballymote/Bunninadden. St Molaise Gaels are also in the group. U-14

OUR U-14s kicked off their championship campaign with a resounding 10-13 to 3-6 win over St John’s last Friday evening. This was an excellent display which saw the team establish a 6-9 to 0-0 half-time lead, and indicates the side’s improvement as they lost heavily to the same opposition earlier this year. They will hope to continue this form against Easkey in the next round in two weeks.

OWENMORE GAELS

CONGRATULATIONS to the Minor Boys who won the A Shield Final last Thursday. OWENMORE Gaels 1-8 Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool 1-6 OWENMORE Gaels secured the Minor A League Shield competition with a hard fought win over Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool on Thursday evening last at the Sligo GAA Centre of Excellence. WET and slippery conditions contributed to a low scoring and at times scrappy game. We were first to make an impression on the scoreboard when midfielder Ross Trill joined the attack to land a fine score after patient build-up. Tubber/Cloonacool hit back with the next two scores. We equalised when Stephen Fallon won possession and offloaded to Oisin Geraghty. Geraghty let the ball inside to Derek Lynch at 14 who turned his man and fired over a fine score. Fallon got his first score of the evening off his left foot, James Duffy with the assist. We were controlling proceedings at this stage with our backs snuffing out any Tubber threats and our midfield on top. Fallon scored a free after a determined run from Duffy was illegally halted. Calum Tonry tagged on another, a fine kick from out on the left. We added one more before half-time, a great team score. Jamie Callaghan and Roly Anderson made two excellent blocks in a row to turn over the ball. It was worked to Kevin Quigley who beat his man down the endline to manufacture a free which, Fallon popped over to leave us 0-6 to 0-2 up at the break and in control. THE second period saw Tubber/ Cloonacool come out fighting. They dominated a very scrappy opening period, scoring the first two points of the half, and but for some good defending and a great save from Mark Walsh could have gotten more. Byron Doherty entered the fray for Calum Tonry to add pace to the forward line. Jack Foley stepped forward from Full-Back to show the way with a great point. Fallon added a free to put us back into a 4 point lead. Kevin Healy was introduced at corner forward for Kevin Quigley. Tubber/Cloonacool got the next two scores, the second diverted over by an alert Jack Foley. A flowing team move from back to front ended with Lynch bearing down on goal but his powerful effort came back off the crossbar and out for a 45 . The resulting effort from Fallon caused confusion in the Tubber/Cloonacool defence and ended up in the back of the net. This was to prove a crucial score as Tubber/Cloonacool fisted an effort to the back of the net in the last minute to leave a final score of 1-8 to 1-6 in our favour.

WELL done to the players and management on their achievement, the clubs first silverware at Minor A level in decades. They will now re-focus their attention on the championship which begins in August. Man of the match Stephen Fallon, accurate in front of the posts but also selfless in his running and workrate throughout. SENIOR Mens Division Two Result: Owenmore Gaels 2-4 St. Pats 2-13 OUR Senior Mens team have been relegated to Division Three, after a poor second half against St. Pats. They now turn their focus to the Junior championship which begins in 3 weeks.

HARD luck to the Mens Division Four team who lost their final league game to Calry/ St. Josephs 0-15 to 1-17 last Wednesday.

BOYS U-14 B Championship Result: Owenmore Gaels 4-8 Castleconnor 4-7. Well done to Gary, Garrett and the lads forgetting their first win of the year in a hard fought contest last Friday.
