GARLAND SUNDAY

It’s that time of year again when the locals of South Sligo and visitors from near and far assemble in the Fr. Kevin Brehony Memorial Park,Keash to celebrate the ancient festival of Lughnasa,known locally as Garland Sunday.Garland Sunday festival 2017 takes place this weekend,commencing on Friday,28th July and concluding with the annual Sportsday on Sunday the 30th–commencing at 2p.m.On Friday evening the King of the Hill 10km. Fun Run/Walk takes place around the historic hill of Keashcorra­n,commencing at 7p.m. Participan­ts assemble at the While Hall at 6. 30p.m. Refreshmen­ts provided on route and afterwards. Later that night at 10p.m. Country star T.R.Dallas returns to the While Hall to provide the music for a social dance in the famed venue.

Garland Sunday in Keash is an opportunit­y for young and old to come together and celebrate one of the longest running traditiona­l festivals in the West of Ireland.The local Committee have worked hard to put an entertaini­ng programme together. Hopefully we will be blessed with a good day to fully enjoy this wonderful occasion. Each and everyone of us need to support this trojan effort, by our simple presence.

Garland Sunday is a massive part of our parish identity. Without the people working tirelessly behind the scenes, this very important historical celebratio­n would be lost.
