Sligo Agricultural Show a real success
THERE was lots to see and do at the Sligo Agricultural Show on Saturday (15 th July) which was officially opened by Mairead McGuinness, MEP for Sligo and first Vice-President of the European Parliament.
There were many and varied competitions involving horses, cattle, sheep, home crafts, a vegetable display and a dog show, to name but a few.
And inevitably there was talk of Brexit. Ms McGuinness said the Show presented a “valuable opportunity to dialogue with all interests on the topic.”
“Irish issues are centre stage in the discussions which resume this week.”
She spoke of the importance of ensuring minimum disruption to trade across the border.
“No one involved in the Brexit discussions is being left in any doubt about the importance of the AGRI sector and how sensitive it is to the effects of Brexit,” she said.
And on the future of the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) Ms McGuinness welcomed recent comments by the EU’s Budget Commissioner Günther Oettinger who stressed the importance of the CAP and Cohesion Policy, emphasising that these policy areas cannot be subjected to severe cuts, as was being muted.
And she said the European Parliament will have a critical role in agreeing the shape of the final deal to emerge between the UK and the EU.
Ms McGuinness congratulated the Sligo Show committee led by chairman, Michael Harte, on the success of the show.
