Funding will support rural recreational projects

TOURISM projects from Raghley to Carrowkeel have received a much-needed funding boost to the tune of almost €1m in what’s seen as a major boost for tourism in rural Sligo.

It includes ¤840,000 to build a National Mountain Bike Centre at Coolaney.

It’s part of a €11 million allocation for over 200 projects nationally under the 2017 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring.

Fine Gael Sligo Leitrim TD, Tony McLoughlin, said the grant was “extremely welcome and will help to boost tourism in Sligo and the northwest.”

“Recreational tourism is growing year on year and so it is crucial we continue to improve facilities to encourage visitors. Figures from Fáilte Ireland show that the hiking and cycling tourism markets are worth approximately €1.2 billion to the Irish economy. Further announcements for Outdoor Recreation projects are expected in the autumn,” he added. Details on page 5.
