Faherty signs with Rovers
Faherty signs ten years after Rovers first hoped to get key player
SLIGO Rovers boss Gerard Lyttle has boosted his side with four signings. On Friday, 20-year-old winger Omar Haughton joined, while three names were added yesterday, Greg Moorhouse, Jamie McDonagh and Vinny Faherty. Moorhouse and McDonagh were revealed earlier in the day, while the news of former Galway United striker Faherty joining the club wasn’t announced until late yesterday. Faherty, a prolific scorer who has notched over 60 career goals, is confident he can make a big impact at The Showgrounds. He said: “I’m hoping it will be a win/ win situation for both parties. I’m hungry to get back to goal scoring form and goals are what are needed to get Rovers out of trouble. I’m confident it will work out well for both of us. I thought the team played really well on both occasions I’ve seen them, and I noted that Daniel Kearns has a knack of getting in some great crosses, which I would love to be on the end of. With that type of service I have no doubt I can get among the goals.” Ironically, the signing of the Galwayman is a case of Rovers finally getting their man 10 years after initially trying to attract him to the Showgrounds. Paul Cook wanted to take Faherty on board in 2007 after he had impressed on trials with Ipswich, but the lure of his hometown club proved too strong. Manager Gerard Lyttle said: “It’s important we have a big squad here. I always like to have three strikes. It’s good competition. It will give some competition for Raffaele Cretaro as well. Vinny is a great player and a great lad. He will have a wee point to prove as well because he hasn’t been used as much as what he’d hope with Galway. Hopefully he has come here with a bit of fire and bite.”
