Discover a hidden Sligo during Heritage Week ‘17

ISLAND-HOPPING on Lough Gill, storytales in Sligo Gaol and panning for gold at Sligo airport are among the many events taking place here as part of National Heritage Week 2017.

Running from 19-27 August, this year’s theme is about helping people learn about and enjoy Ireland’s nature.

There are over 40 events scheduled to showcase Sligo’s heritage, from guided tours, to talks, walks and outdoor performanc­es, and the good news is most of them are free.

Literature fans can discover the ‘real’ Secret Scripture at a dedicated tour bringing you to the locations connected to Sebastian Barry’s novel based on Sligo town.

Another free guide to Sligo introduces Pic people to some of the stories and places that make Sligo such a wonderful town.

Simply download the free Guidigo App and search for Sligo Secret Scripture or Sligo Heritage Trail.

‘If Walls Could Talk’ is an exhibition and tour of Sligo Gaol detailing incredible tales from it’s history.

Volunteers from Friends of Sligo Gaol will also add your family or neighbourh­ood memories to their collection.

There will be talks dedicated to local historical figures such as W.B. Yeats, Col. W.G. Wood-Martin who died in 1917, Calry poet/journalist Michael A Hargadon and merchant/benefactor Peter O’Connor from Edenbawn House, Calry.

Period home lovers will get a once-yearly chance to peek inside some historical homes at Open Days.

Lissadell House, Markree Castle, Collooney, Millview House at Sligo Folk Park in Riverstown, The Schoolhous­e at Annaghmore, Collooney, Castletown Manor in Corballa, Dolly’s Cottage and Rathcarric­k House, Strandhill and Temple House Ballymote are all opening their doors on various dates throughout the week.

Lough Gill Bushcraft and Adventure are organising an adventure camp on Lough Gill which involves paddling to an island, campfire cooking, bushcraft and music.

Calry Local History Society have organised a tour of an ancient monastic settlement and the old burial site of the Parish of Calry on Church Island.

Geoscience will be brought to life at the Tellus Family Open Day at Sligo Airport - you can see the plane, meet the pilots, pan for gold or check out the data.
