Calry locals to be honoured during Heritage Week

Calry Local History Society is organising a 7km walk along Lady Nature Trail at 3pm this Sunday. The trail starts at the top of Tully Hill approximately a quarter of a mile beyond St Angela’s College and runs down towards the north shore of Lough Gill and along the shore, re-joining the road at the foot of Tully Hill. The trail is rich in biodiversity and offers many interesting historical sites along the way. Nature experts and local historians will be on hand to explain the sights and flora along the trail.

On Wednesday 23 August at 4pm, a guided tour to Church Island will be commence by boat from Parkes’ Castle to the island, which is an ancient monastic settlement and the old burial site for the Parish of Calry. The derelict church has ogham writing carved into its walls.

On Friday 25 August at 8pm, Chair of the Sligo Heritage Group Cllr Seamus Kilgannon, will unveil the Peter O’Connor plaque in the Marian Hall, Calry, followed by a talk.

Another talk by Gerard Cunningham, Chair of Calry Local History Society on Monday 21st August at 8pm in the Clayton Hotel will celebrate the journalist, poet and publicist, Michael Hargadon, who was born in Colga townland Calry in 1888.
