First time visitors love the festival

ONE stall at the Old Fair Day that was attracting attention was that of Geordie McAdam and Wilson Davies.

The colourful display of violins made out of household items such as matchsticks and lollipop sticks was visiting the Old Fair Day for the first ever time.

Largely the work of Geordie, he makes his violins as a hobby and does not sell them. “THIS is our first time at the fair day. It was Cawley’s Hotel who brought us here,” he told The Sligo Champion.

“So we have violins made out of lollipop sticks and we have one made out of tin.

“The tin violin is signed by lots of famous musicians.

“There are matchstick violins and an eight string fiddle. You can play thembut the sound might be a bit different,” he added.

The matchstick violins in particular were a talking point. Geordie explained where he got the idea: “A guy on YouTube made the Taj Mahal out of matchsticks, so then I decided if he could make that, then I would have no problem making a violin out of matchsticks.

“It takes about 30 hours to make them. We don’t sell them, they’re more for personal use, or a hobby.”

The pair said they were enjoying the day immensely: “This is a brilliant festival, we love it.”

Geordie and Wilson are part of a bluegrass group from Belfast, called ‘Woodworms’.
