Fair Day shows that ‘community spirit is still alive’

-

COMMUNITY groups turn out in their numbers each year for the Old Fair Day.

Whether it’s to raise funds or awareness, the Fair Day is the ideal place to get speaking to locals who may be interested.

Among the local groups and causes at the fair day was the South Sligo Community Group Ltd. The group are fundraising to continue to develop South Sligo Community Park.

A new astro turf pitch was opened at the park in May, and the group are hoping to add even more facilities to the park, with the help of fundraising.

Patrina McCarthy, one of the many fundraisers, explained what the group are hoping to add to the facility in the near future.

“We’re looking at developing the area where the soccer pitch is.

“We have a lovely new astro pitch so now we want to finish the car park and do up a boundary wall, develop the soccer pitch and then build a full running track around it,” she told The Sligo Champion.

“Eventually then down the line we want to build a clubhouse.

“We’ve really started fundraising and working on this in the last 2-3 years.”

Patrina is a volunteer within the community, and she is mindful of the fact that her children use the community park, so is keen to help out with fundraising.

“The athletic club and Real Tubber will both be using the facilities there so it will serve a huge number of people,” she said.

“Anybody who has kids involved in either of those clubs will want the best facilities for them. There are over 100 children in the athletic club, and Real Tubber has a huge number of young teams so it will service a huge number of children,” Patrina added.

And she said that their presence at the Old Fair Day got a good reaction.

“It’s brilliant. Fundraising for things like this shows that the community spirit is still alive.”
