New speed limit signs
MOTORISTS travelling through Ballintogher village are now being met by new digital speed limit signs.
It’s the result of campaigning by the R290 Action Group and Councillor Thomas Healy to reduce speeding through the villages of Ballintogher, Ballisodare, Ballygawley and Collooney.
Chair of the R290 Action Group, Oliver McLoughlin and Cllr Healy welcomed the new signs - Cllr Healy made a number of submissions to Sligo County Council relating to speeding issues throughout Sligo during a review on speed limits in the County in 2016.
“People had expressed widespread concern regarding speed through villages like Ballintogher, Ballisodare, Ballygawley and Collooney,” he told The Sligo Champion. “One of the submis- sions I made, in consultation with residents and landowners, was to put speed alert signs in place in all four villages with Ballintogher suggested as being the first. I am delighted therefore to welcome these speed signs which have been shown to be highly effective in reducing speed by making motorists more aware of their behaviour and driving habits.“
Cllr Healy also welcomed the extension of the Ballygawley village speed limit which now extends out past Castle Dargan. “Many locals had raised their concerns to me regarding the speeding of motorists at this section of road. I requested Sligo County Council to erect warning signs for pedestrians ahead, as a lot of the local people walk to the hotel,” he said, thanking the local Engineer and the Council for their help.
