YOUR NEWS

Please send in your notes to Emma Gallagher by Thursday to cloonacoolnotes@gmail.com. had a big win at Croke Park a few days earlier over Roscommon in the all-Ireland quarter final.

When recognised in his garda uniform he was a big hit with children and GAA fans from various counties, and many people had their photos taken with him. This kind of interaction between the public, fans and sport stars could only happen in Ireland and is lovely to see. Best wishes are extended to the Mayo team as they take on the great Kerry team in the all-Ireland semi-final next Sunday.

Another Mayo team connection to Tubbercurry is Conor Loftus, who is a star forward on the team. Conor is a son of Margaret Kilcoyne, originally from the Rock, Ballymote Road, Tubbercurry and is grandson of Luke and Carmel Kilcoyne. Rumour has it that both David Clarke and Conor Loftus may line out with the Tubbercurry team next year.

REVENUE INSPECTORS

One of the talking points of the Old Fair Day was the presence of a team of inspectors from the Revenue Commissioners, who were checking for trading licences from all the street traders and venders. While it is agreed that all traders should be licenced and should pay their taxes, it was felt Revenue went beyond the call of duty in many cases. Street artists of various sorts and voluntary organisations including fundraisers were also questioned as well as local artisan producers and craft people of various products. These types of craftsmen and women are carrying on a long tradition of craft and entertainment that is crucial to the education and entertainment value of the Old Fair Day. A bit of common sense by the inspectors would have been welcome.

BANK OF IRELAND

The cash desk in Bank of Ireland closed for the last time on August 8 last, the day before the Old Fair Day. The Bank of Ireland building on Teeling Street has traded for nearly 100 years, under the Hibernian Bank name, prior to becoming Bank of Ireland in the 1970s.

Staff are still available on the floor to help customers do their business through the cash machines. They say lodgements and withdrawals will become easier, but that remains to be seen. Already shops, pubs and business are struggling to get to grips with this new regime, and the scarcity of change, especially €5 note and large coins is a real problem. Elderly people especially are frustrated and concerned about being able to do their banking business.

The staff at a local level in Bank of Ireland are very pleasant and will help all customers as best they can. However, the public throughout Ireland are in shock at this national policy change for small branches. The situation will be monitored closely to see how the change effects people and businesses.

FAMINE GRAVEYARD

A Mass will be held in the old workhouse/famine graveyard at the back of Connolly Park on this Wednesday, August 16, at 8 p.m. in memory of those who died in Tubbercurry as a result of the famine in the 1840s and also those who died in the Workhouse as a result of poverty and starvation in the decades after the famine.

Tubbercurry workhouse was built in the 1850s as part of a national workhouse building programme to help alleviate poverty, starvation and distress and it served all South Sligo till the early years of the 20th century when it closed. It was demolished in the 1930s by Sligo County Council as it had fallen into disrepair and the council built Connolly Park on the grounds of the old workhouse.

After Mass on Wednesday, August 16, a cup of tea and refreshments will be served in Killorans Restaurant and a session of Irish music, songs and dance featuring local musicians and performers will take place. Young and old are invited to attend both Mass and Irish traditional session in Killorans.

SÉAMUS GOLDEN R.I.P.

The recent unexpected death occurred of Séamus Golden, late of Drimina, Tubbercurry. In his mid 70’s Séamus was a caring and easy going man who farmed at his own pace and own time.

Like many of his generation, Séamus went to England as a teenager to seek work and opportunities and worked throughout England for 25 years, returning to Ireland in the early 1980s.On his return he lived with and cared for his mother who lived into her 90’s and only died around 10 years ago.

Séamus busied himself with farming and was a keen fisherman, as he lived along the banks of the river Moy. He was also a keen darts and draughts player. Saving Turf on the bog was also a job Séamus enjoyed, and he had actually brought home two loads of this year’s turf which he had saved just a few weeks prior to his death.

His remains reposed at the Coen funeral home, removal took place at St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestrane and burial took place in Rhue cemetery.

Séamus is survived by his sisters Ethel Calvey (Drimina) Janie Heaphy (Kilkenny), Kathleen Barber (New Jersey), Maureen Ryder and Betty Feely (Kent), Brothers in law, nieces nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

MICHAEL GALLAGHER R.I.P.

The recent peaceful death occurred, after a long illness, of Michael Gallagher, late of Masshill, Cloonacool.

In his mid 50’s, Michael was a quiet spoken, gentle individual who enjoyed his farm work and living in the middle of the Ox Mountains. A most loving neighbour and friend to those that knew him, Michael was always on call to those that needed help.

His days out at sheep sales, Fair Days or general agricultural gatherings were a pleasure for Michael and he was a most interesting conversationalist when relaxed in his surroundings.

Michael’s remains reposed at his home in Masshill, and funeral Mass took place in St Michael’s Church, Cloonacool with burial in Cloonacool cemetery.

He is survived by his sisters Mary (USA) Catherine (Kilmactigue) brothers Tommy (USA) and Peter (Gurteen), in-laws, nieces, nephews and large circle of friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
