Bookworms are awarded for their summer reading efforts
More than 300 children from South Sligo took part in a successful summer reading scheme in association with Tubbercurry Library.
A special awards ceremony to mark the successful summer star reading adventure took place yesterday at 11am (Monday) at the Library.
Acting Librarian Michelle Brennan said: “This is an initiative that runs throughout Ireland during the Summer months, which encourages children to read during their holidays.”
She continued: “We have had over 300 participants from the Tubbercurry area and we would like to celebrate this by awarding those children with certificates and medals.”
The Cathaoirleach for Ballymote Tubbercurry municipal District Council, Councillor Jerry Lundy presented the medals to the little bookworms.
The summer reading scheme offers children the chance to get more reading done during the school holidays and the initiative was designed to foster a love of reading among children.
Cllr. Lundy complimented the readers involved and stressed the importance of reading at a young age and how a love of books can stay with you forever.
