Handrail is needed for point pool

-

WHILE welcoming the extensive refurbishment works at the outdoor swimming pool at Deadman’s Point in Rosses Point, Councillor Tom MacSharry has called on the Council to install safety railings.

Work was completed in the summer on restoring the pool and Cllr MacSharry told The Sligo Champion that the facility was a credit to the council and is in regular use by locals and visitors alike.

Over the summer significant repairs or replacement of damaged sections of the swimming pool walls were carried out while repairs to the concrete steps and platform area surrounding the pool and the provision of a new platform/ viewing area for people with mobility issues were also carried out.

Other works included the installation of a new 1.8m wide ramped footpath from the public car park to the viewing area, fencing to prevent people entering the water on the south side of the pool and a new timber post and rail fence along the boundary between the pool lands and the adjacent Sligo Yacht Club.

“It’s great to see the pool being used so much and is a great asset to Rosses Point.

“The only issue that has arisen is the lack of hand railings for people entering and exiting the pool.

“Many people who use the pool on a regular basis have expressed the hope that hand railings can be installed.

“Some of those who use the pool are elderly and they are a little concerned of slipping or falling,” said Cllr MacSharry.

He has taken the issue up with the Council and is hoping the pool can be assessed by the local engineer and funding provided for railings.

“I know funding might be difficult to source but I’m sure it can be found somewhere and it might not be too an expensive job to complete,” added Mr MacSharry.
