Trad fest honours Michael Coleman

THE Coleman Traditiona­l Festival, dedicated to the world renowned fiddle player Michael Coleman takes place in Ceoláras Coleman, Gurteen from August 23rd to 27th.

This unique event takes place once a year and is firmly establishe­d as one of the best traditiona­l music festivals in Ireland, attracting people from all over the world.

On Wednesday, August 23 the ‘ The Michael Coleman Story’ will be staged.

This musical dramatisat­ion tells the life story of Michael Coleman through music, song and dance. On Thursday, August 24 there will be a ‘ Film Night’ in the Coleman theatre with the screening of ‘ The Sligo Masters’ DVD which tells the story of Michael Coleman, Paddy Killoran, & James Morrison.

The DVD ‘ Peter Horan – Still Beating Time’ will also be screened which is a profile of Peter Horan with the music and musicians of south Sligo.

On Friday August 25 the official opening of the festival will be performed by Leas Cathaoirle­ach of Sligo County Council, Cllr. Keith Henry followed by a concert featuring the best of traditiona­l musicians, singers and dancers including Junior Davey, Fiona Doherty, P. J Hernon, Michael Hurley, John Dwyer, Colette Gaffney, Maureen O’Dowd, Kerrie Herrity, Laura Ganley & special guest, Angela Deane – All Ireland Whistle Player.

On Saturday August 26 world renowned accordion player, Anne Conroy Burke together with fiddle player, Eileen O’Brien and piano player, Deirdre McSherry will perform in concert. Later that day at 9pm there will be a Festival Céilí in Gurteen Hall with the Swallows Tail Céilí Band.

On Sunday Aug 27 from 3 – 5pm visit the Coleman Cottage, Mount Irwin for a final music session. All concerts commence at 8.30pm in the Coleman Centre and the Céilí at 9pm in Gurteen Hall. Fáilte roimh gach duine.

Michael Coleman’s influence on fiddle playing in Sligo was huge, and his legacy lives on, particular­ly in Gurteen with the Coleman Music Centre named in his honour.
