Biggest crowd yet taking on Warriors

THE 33rd Warriors Run is taking place this Saturday with the largest ever number of competitors in the race’s history.

The action gets underway at 3pm in Strandhill and there is plenty of entertainment afterward for the whole family with a marquee and funfair adding to the carnival atmosphere. “This year we have a record 1,040 people registered, which is the highest ever,” Micki Murray, PRO of the organising committee, said. “That is the biggest yet and we have a lot of people picking up on transfers too. There is 18 on the committee this year and we’ve had a good influx of new people which brings new ideas in along with the stalwarts there who have good experience organising the race. We will see a good few previous winners returning, there are so many top quality athletes taking part.

“It’s all happening at 3pm on Saturday. The race itself used to take place on a Sunday, we changed it when it was the 25th anniversary. I actually remember when it was also held on Friday evenings for the first couple of years.

“There is a Junior 5KM run directly after the main race and the Funwalk which is getting popular too,” Micki added. The funfair will be there all weekend and on Sunday it’s the Junior Warriors Run is being held from 2- 5pm in Strand Celtic. “This is a big community event. In terms of volunteers, there will be approximately 150, including the Civil Defence and the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue. Core Timing is doing the race times and the course itself is the same as last year.

“It’s a fantastic event for the local area, we will have the festival marquee and live music,” Micki added.
