CLAY PIGEON SHOOT

The Lough Talt Clay Pigeon Shoot is being held this Sunday, August 27, at Mount Taffe, near Lough Talt. This is the oldest shoot West of the Shannon, and was first held in 1953 when parish priest Fr Peter Harte from Tourlestrane organised it to raise funds for the parish. The Lough Talt Cup was presented by Michael J O’Hara, Solicitor, Foxford.

The Shoot was not held over the last 20 years due to various circumstances and challenges, but is being revived this year in memory of the late Michael Rochford of Lough Talt. Michael died suddenly just 12 months ago and was an avid shooting and game conservation enthusiast. His love of Lough Talt and the Ox Mountains was infectious, and he was one of the chief helpers over the years when the shoot was in full swing over the decades 50’ s – 90’ s.

There are various competitions for shooting men/ women of various standards, so the call is going out to all the shooting fraternity to come to the Lough Talt Shoot.

The event is being organised by the Tubbercurry and District Gun Club. As well as the main competition for the Lough Talt Perpetual Challenge Cup, there is a new competition, The Rochford Memorial Cup in memory of Michael Rochford.

Various winners of the Lough Talt Cup include Paddy McCarrick, John Conlon, Ian Clarke and other great shooting men who have now passed to their eternal reward.

The Shoot starts at midday and takes place at Mount Taffe, via turn at Lough Talt Church. Various competitions for different levels and styles, and further details from: Robert Lundy Ph: 087 2646422, Michael Conway Ph: 087 2319325, Michael Egan, Bonniconlon or Derek Deehan, Lough Talt.

GILLESPIE GOLF CUP

The 35th annual Gillespie Cup was played at Enniscrone Golf Club last week in fine weather. This is an annual outing for all South Sligo Golfers or those with South Sligo connections, and has been sponsored by the Gillespie family over the last 35 years. Winner of this year’s competition from a field of 130 golfers was Eamon Óg Gallagher with a fine score of 44 points.

The Gillespie family are ceasing their promotion of this competition after this year, and many tributes were made to the family and especially to John Gillespie for their help over the last 35 years. The event will continue next year under a new format and promoted by Tubbercurry Golf Club, but the message going out is that the day out in Enniscrone will continue for all South Sligo golfers on the second Monday of August 2018. Mark the day in your diary.
