The ‘delicate issue of abortion’ considered
Madam Editor,
I write this letter, sensitive to just how delicate an issue abortion is.
Having given the issue much considered thought over the years, I find myself coming back again and again to the heartfelt view that life begins at fertilisation.
Were it not so, when does one determine the developmental cut off point – at two years, seven years? We are in a state of development continually up to adulthood. Each life is very precious and to be valued, at whatever stage.
One has only to see someone’s face light up when they know that their existence is acknowledged and appreciated to know this to be true. Prospective parents often face very challenging situations during a pregnancy. I would respectful- ly suggest that extra support and kindness is what is needed to support a couple through a difficult pregnancy and following the birth of their baby. Judgment is unhelpful. Compassion is crucial.
I do not say this lightly. As the mother of a beautiful daughter with profound special needs, I understand fully the myriad of emotions which can surface in this situation. Yet, listening to my heart, I come back again to my belief that human life – all human life – is to be treasured from fertilisation onwards. For these reasons, I respectfully submit that the Eighth Amendment should remain in place in its current form. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Léon O’Grady Mullaghmore
