700 readers get medals
ALMOST 700 children formed part of the Summer Stars Reading programme at Sligo Central Library which ran from 27 th June to 28th August.
Cathaoirleach Councillor Seamus Kilgannon, Mayor Councillor Hubert Keaney and Sligo Rovers players Seamus Sharkey and Benny Igiehon were on hand to present all participating children with a Summer Stars Medal and Certificate.
690 took part in total, of those, 82 joined the Library for the first time in order to take part.
The presentation took place in The Glasshouse hotel, where parents and grandparents enjoyed the celebration with the children.
The Summer Stars reading programme encourages children to read eight books from the library during the summer .There are free rewards to collect along the way; book marks, stickers, wrist bands, swimming hats, fridge magnets and pencils. Librarians visited 13 schools in June to promote the programme among school children.4,503 children’s books were borrowed in Central Library in June. This number rocketed to 8,018 in July with children visiting Central Library in their hundreds.
