Bus Eireann needs to “respect” public

-

IT’S a “disgrace” that Bus Eireann has not provided bus shelters at the Tubbercurry Bypass and on the N17 at Curry Village.

That’s according to Councillor Jerry Lundy who put down a motion calling for two bus shelters to be installed in each location.

“Up North there are many bus shelters,” he told this month’s Council meeting.

Cllr Lundy said there were two women in Curry willing to give land for a bus pull-in bay which was a “good move” for the community.

“But people still have to stand out in the rain and we’ve had very wintery weather recently,” he said.

He said many of the passengers waiting on the side of the road were travelling to Galway in wet clothes. “It’s not acceptable,” he said.

In response, Senior Engineer Tom Brennan told Cllr Lundy that the Council was investigating the possibility of putting bus shelters up on the N17 at Circular Road in Tubbercurry.

As for Curry, Mr Brennan said land and funding would be required to provide two bus shelters along the N17.

Cllr Margaret Gormley said “it falls on deaf ears with Bus Eireann. “They’re not afraid to take the public’s money - it’s time they gave something back.”

She pleaded with Bus Eireann to “show a bit of respect for the paying public and restore the bus shelter to Ballinafad also.

Councillors Martin Baker and Paul Taylor had sought a new bus stop for Ballinafad, south of Castlebaldwin, close to the Roscommon border.

“We requested it be reinstated but for some reason Bus Eireann are not doing it. It’s rural areas being forgotten again,” said Cllr Baker.

Cllr Taylor said it was a huge issue: “The people don’t mind where it stops, just somewhere in the village. There are a number of students commuting in to IT Sligo so this is needed.” Council officials said the villagers should consult with Bus Eireann first to see if they will stop in Ballinafad.
