Greenway potential is highlighted at latest cycle event
IN an effort to draw attention to the huge potential of a greenway in the area, Brendan Monaghan cycled from Enniskillen to Tuam on Saturday.
Part of this particular route shadows the disused railway line running between Collooney and Athenry. Mr Monaghan, who cycled from Tuam to Paris last year for Euro 2016 Football Championships, is involved in the Tuam Greenway Campaign and he was joined on his cycle through Co. Sligo by local supporters of the Greenway for Sligo Campaign.
Pat McCarrick of Sligo Greenway Co-op said: “The development of this route from Northern Ireland, that will link with the Dublin Galway Greenway at Athenry, is essential if Ireland is to create a Greenway Network.
“It is also essential that Co. Sligo is on this network; to attract this type of unique tourism and indeed to provide local jobs. With further regard to the cycle I would ask all who can turn out on the day to please do so, if only for a few miles. The completed Sligo Greenway will run for almost 40km.”
The cycle followed and highlighted the following: Enniskillen to the border on the abandoned railway, the Dromahair Greenway Loop, Collooney to Bellaghy, currently under examination as a greenway, Charlestown to Claremorris and finally, the Milltown to Tuam section.
