Thief ordered to bring ¤500 to court this week

-

A thief who stole ¤100 of meat from a shop in Sligo was told the ¤100 he brought to court in compensation wasn’t enough.

Stefan Muntean of Willow Park, Athlone, admitted stealing the meat from a fridge in a Lithuanian shop at Adelaide Street on 6 th May last.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne read out Muntean’s list of 26 previous convictions.

“You’re a thief and you’ve been getting away with it for too long. The courts have been too lenient,” said Judge Kilrane.

“You won’t see him again,” said Mr Tom MacSharry, defence solicitor.

“I will,” said the judge, “I’ ll see him this day week with ¤500. I don’t care where you get it - get it from your kith and kin,” he told Muntean.

“Can he have two weeks?” asked Mr MacSharry.

“No. He can have four months if he wants to,” replied the judge.

He remanded Muntean on bail to this Thursday to have the money in court. “I have every confidence that you can find it,” he told the defendant.
