State drops ¤500 taxi fare dodge charge

-

THE State has dropped a charge against a 28-year-old asylum seeker who took a taxi from Tralee to Sligo District Court costing ¤500 earlier this month.

It was alleged that Waleed Khan, a native of Pakistan and formerly of Globe House, Sligo, made off without paying the ¤500 taxi fare on arrival at the courthouse where he was due to appear on a public order charge on 7 th September.

He was arrested and brought before a sitting of the District Court that day and remanded in custody.

Last Thursday Sligo State Solicitor Mr Hugh Sheridan said he was offering no evidence in the case.

Judge Kevin Kilrane struck out the charge and told Khan he was free to go.
