Connaughton Road car park should be made into Traveller accommodation

-

Madam Editor,

Some of the families at Connaughton Road are there for thirty years and do not want to move. They have grandchildren and even great grandchildren living on the site now.

Some of these younger generations would like to move on but not into an Estate house, on their own, in the middle of a block because that won’t work; the neighbours don’t want them and the Traveller families know that they are not welcome.

Each side is nervous of the other.

There are not half enough houses available for the number of people on the housing list for many years, so why boot out all the people who are currently happy enough trying to live at Connaughton Road, just to appease the few dressed up

bullies who can only see the few parking spaces which could be developed into high rise dwellings, and which no one else wants.

Offering a house to a so called settled family of four persons, starting out on life is not the same as driving a colony of settled Travellers, six families, up to 60 persons , men women and children en masse, including adults, teenagers, and babies, off the few Square Yards occupied by them for thirty years, down the road to God Knows Where? Some field somewhere ?

Sligo should develop the site at Connaughton Road into a State of the Art site for the families who wish to continue living there and show the world what Sligo can do for Travellers.

Connaughton Road might be in World Media but it is still only a small area, well tucked in by the Travellers for safety, privacy, convenience to the hospital, churches and shops, but is still only a small site used only by the Traveller’s for thirty years. A massive Car Park has been provided at the same site.

Any Coach Driver worthy of the name, will know where to Park in Sligo.

They have Satellite Navigators in their vehicle’s and on their phones.

There are always plenty of parking spaces at Connaughton Road Car Park, and it is up to Sligo County Council to develop a Coach Parking Area. At Adelaide Street Car Park for example.

Yours faithfully,

Mary-Kelly-White, Collooney
