LGBT Teachers Group meet in the Glasshouse

-

A group of LGBT Teachers met in Sligo last weekend for an information meeting held in the Glasshouse Hotel.

The INTO LGBT Teachers’ Group is a trade union group that supports and advances the cause of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender primary school teachers in Ireland.

Last Saturday the group was joined by local LGBT primary teachers at their September meeting which was held in The Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo.

The group has worked hard to end discrimination against LGBT teachers and in 2015 welcomed the amendment of Section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act.

This year the INTO LGBT Teachers’ Group is continuing to build awareness of teaching resources for primary schools to address homophobic and transphobic bullying including the Different Family Same Love poster which is a valued resource in primary schools nationwide.

As part of their work in reaching out to INTO members across the country the group held its meeting in Sligo as it aims to increase social visibility and support for LGBT teachers.

Other meetings are due to take place later in the year across the country, including Dublin and Cork.

The group meets about six times a year and says it is encouraged by the open discussion and support available to all teachers at the regular meetings.

New members are always welcome and those looking for more information about the group, including meeting dates and times can go to the webpage on the INTO website - www. into.ie/lgbt or view updates on Facebook @INTOLGBTeachersGroup or Twitter @intolgbt.
