The Sligo Champion

Young steps down

-

AFTER their defeat to Eastern Harps in the Belfry Senior Championship semi-final, St Mary’s boss Glenn Young told his players he was stepping down. He told the Sligo Champion: “I told the players after the game that this was my last managerial job.

“I’ve a young family and with the time it takes as well, I’ve been 13 years on the trot doing this and I need a break. It’s getting to the stage where I want to put the feet up,” he said.

Glenn admitted things just didn’t go right for St Mary’s in the semi-final and players didn’t perform as well as they are capable.

“It was a very poor performance. Seeing where we were at after the quarter final win and then looking at how we could be that bad in the semi-final.

“It probably you know came down to a lot of things. We were a bit complacent, maybe thinking too much about a county final and not working hard enough.”

He said it was no individuals fault, instead it was collectively as a team and management for not preparing properly.

The first half chances that were not taken also played a part, he said. “We scored 1-3 before half-time out of 15 attempts. Collectively maybe a third of the team showed their ability that they are capable of, that was the height of it.

“We didn’t learn lessons and you don’t mind losing if you have performed but we didn’t.

“It is hugely disappointing,” the manager admitted. He said Harps were deserved winners on the day.

“In fairness to Harps, they got their just rewards and we can have no complaint.

“We thought bringing in Nathan and Mark would freshen things up but we never got going, it just wasn’t to be,” Glenn added. “The team will be back but I won’t be manager,” he said.
