The Sligo Champion

Colsh competes at World Masters

-

A Sligo rower was among 7,000 athletes from around the world taking part in the World Masters rowing championships held on the picturesque Lake Bled in the Alps of Slovenia recently.

Sligo Rowing Club’s Tommy Colsh represented his club and country in his age category in two boat types; the single scull & the coxless pairs event.

His first event of the championship was the coxless pair event which he raced with fellow former international and Irish rowing champion Caimin Moloney from the Commercial rowing club in Dublin. The pair raced extremely well finishing 5th overall in their category final in a hotly contested race that saw the Irish pairing finish behind crews from Germany, Russia, Great Britain and Denmark.

Tommy then raced in his Sligo colours in the single scull event for his age category.

This is a particularly difficult discipline that Tommy has become more accustomed to watching from the comfort of a safety launch in recent years as he coached his young protege, Glenn Patterson, to dominant success; both at home and abroad in the Irish national colours. Tommy had a slow start in his final but a strong sec- ond half to the race saw him claw his back to a fifth overall position.

Colsh was satisfied with his overall performance but for the moment he must once again take off his racing suit and don his coaching cap along with fellow Sligo Rowing coaches, Molua Donoghue, Rory Clarke and Ray Murtagh as they begin a new, and hopefully very successful rowing season.
