The Sligo Champion

GSS and Bald Eagles share the spoils

-

GSS and the Bald Eagles played out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw on Wednesday in the Sligo Rovers Astro League. With both sides defeated in their opening games, this was an opportunity for them to kick start their season and climb the league standings. Jamie Conlon opened the scoring for the Bald Eagles after a neat finish from inside the box ten minutes before half time. The second half proved extremely open and end to end, GSS were rewarded for their resilience and hard work with a penalty. Brendan Lowry stepped up and calmly made it 1-1. Incredibly from there, the 10 men of GSS went in search of a winner 15 minutes from time. After some fantastic work down the right wing, Mick Kelly fired a bullet of an effort from 18 yards out which gave Adam McLoughlin in the Bald Eagles goal no chance. No sooner were the celebrations finished, that Seamie Cannon responded to make it 2-2. Both sides went in search of a winner and Jamie Conlon got his second of the night with five minutes to go. However, with the points looking secure, GSS were rewarded a corner and landed an equaliser courtesy of John McNulty. Both sides had to settle for a point each, which was probably a fair result on the night. Foleys Bar had a comfortable 3-0 over the White Gorillas in what proved to be a lack lustre performance from the Gorillas. Glen Hargadon, Gary Rooney and Mark Creed got the goals for Foleys, who continued their 100% start to the season. For the White Gorillas, it’s two defeats from two and they will be keen to pick up some points in the coming weeks. Defending champions Sally Gardens returned for the new season by defeating the newly formed Bourbon Bar 2-1. Man of the match Niall O’Donnell gave the Sally’s an early 1-0 lead, which was then cancelled by a screamer from Shaun Dunne. The Bourbon heaped on the pressure in the second half and had a total of four efforts cleared off the line by the Sally’s back four. However, the Sally Gardens showed why they are champions as they weathered the storm and against the run of play won the game courtesy of a late winner from Adrian Egan. This week’s Fixtures: Tuesday 9pm GSS vs White Gorillas, Wednesday 8pm Ballymote Celtic Vs Forrest Celtic, 9pm Bald Eagles vs Sally Gardens. Friday 9pm Foleys Bar vs Strand Celtic.
