Sligo proud to host AllIreland finals Saturday

-

THEY are normally held in Dublin but this Saturday the All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling and Camogie finals will be staged in IT Sligo.

They are on this coming Saturday in the Knocknarea Arena with large crowds expected in support of the players.

The Martin Donnelly Interprovincial Finals are being organised by the Sligo GAA Inclusion/Games for All committee in collaboration with Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership and the National Games for All Committee.

The finals are running from 11am until 15:40pm and the organisers in Sligo say it’s a big honour to have the event here.

This is the fifth year of the competition and the organisers were granted the privilege of hosting the event as Sligo is the European Volunteer Capital for 2017.

Tim Hynes, Chairman of the Sligo Games for All Committee, said everyone is looking forward to what should be a bumper-packed day on Saturday.

He said as it is normally held in Dublin that it’s great to see it move to the Northwest this year.

Tim added: “This event is usually Dublin based and we are delighted to host the finals in Sligo and play our part in the enormous volunteering efforts across county Sligo. Wheelchair hurling/camogie is going from strength to strength and ensures that our great games can be enjoyed by both able bodied and people with a disability,” he added.

Brian Armitage, who is the National GAA for All Chairman, said days like these are what the committee is all about.

He said: “When our Committee talks about GAA for All, it’s days like these we mean.

“I’d like to pay a special mention to our GAA volunteer network and our coaching personnel.”

Tim added: “Finally sincere thanks to the Connacht GAA Council and especially John Prenty (Secretary) and President Mick Rock for supporting the Connacht Wheelchair Hurling/Camogie team, and to Sligo GAA County Board and chairman Joe Taaffe for their assistance.

“Sincere thanks to the wheelchair hurling/camogie players for their time, determination and effort in playing and promoting the game of wheelchair hurling/camogie.”

This Saturday, IT Sligo will be bustling with activity as the All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling and Camogie finals begin.

Pop along and see some fantastic players in action during the day.
