Battle of the Musicals is all set to take to the stage!
Preparations are well underway for what is promised to be one of the most exciting events to hit Sligo since Tops of the Town.
Battle of the Musicals produced by Pop-Up Theatre comes to the Clayton Hotel on Saturday the 21st of October and promises to bring the same buzz and thrill to town that Tops did back in its heyday!
Six of Sligo’s biggest companies and groups are in intense rehearsals as they prepare to go from stage newcomers to superstars by performing famous numbers from legendary musicals!
AbbVie Ballytivnan take on the sensational “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, Slimming World Sligo Town will be doing “The Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Markievicz House choir The Markievicz Minstrels will be sweeping everyone off their feet with the magical Sound of Music, Abbott are bringing the soul with “The Commitments”, the fabulous Coolaney Gospel Choir tackle the fantastic Sister Act, and Sligo’s no.1 the Gara- vogue Bar will be rocking the night with a medley from “Rock of Ages”.
Almost all of the performers are complete novices to performing on stage and have decided to take part just for fun, something which Pop-Up Theatre are thrilled to see becoming a reality again.
“For a really long time people felt like they couldn’t just get up on stage and perform without judgement – reality TV and talent contests have made some people afraid to just let their hair down and take a chance on giving performing a go without fear,” said a spokesperson.
But shows like Tops of the Town used to give people that chance, and people made memories to last a lifetime, as well as making new friends and having a serious laugh. We’re so delighted to see those days coming back around again, and in turn inspiring and encouraging people to get involved in local amateur theatre, which is such a huge part of our culture here in Sligo.” Tickets are €15 and are available on the door.
