The Sligo Champion

Are we all just being duped by those in the corridors of power?

-

Madam Editor.

I’m beginning to regret paying my TV licence. What value are we getting?

We are told that we must pay good, big salaries to all of those stars. The only stars I see happens when I close my eyes and begin to consider that we are all being duped. We have 158 TDs getting very large salaries. Most of them are party people whose only guideline is that they must toe the party line and vote at the appropriate time. I’m sure we could programme robots to do an equal job, at a fraction of the cost.

I’m scandalised by the reputed salaries given to our leading bankers.

We are told that they must be given these figures to insure that our banks are led by the best in the world. It’s as if the financial crisis never happened here.

They say that the money to be offered to the next Garda Commissioner will have to be such that it will attract in experienced applicants from outside Ireland.

This means doubling what the money used to be. Since when did all of our able, suitable and upright likely candidates suddenly vanish?

I hear that the next CEO (Manager) of Leitrim Co Council, who is soon to be appointed, can expect a salary of 127,000 euro – about four times the average paid to an ordinary worker.

My observations tell me that present-day Co CEOs, who are in effect dictators, do best when they rigidly enforce government policies. You don’t have to be too bright to do that. Ireland is a great little country, surely, and lucky appointees, at the top, will always be worth top salaries – “world class”, you might say.

Yours Sincerely,

Cllr Des Guckian, Dromod, Co Leitrim.
