Women’s Super Sprint Triathlon
SLIGO Triathlon Club held their annual Women’s Initiative Super Sprint Triathlon recently at the Cleveragh Sports Complex.
This in one of the most important days in the club’s calendar run in conjunction with Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership and is the culmination of 6 weeks training for 40 women. Its aim is to take those who have never previously completed a triathlon and give them 6 weeks intensive training, building their fitness and competency in all 3 disciplines of swimming, cycling, and running culminating in a pool based super sprint triathlon.
It is a fantastic event in which there is huge demand for each year.
The Super Sprint Triathlon is focussed on building the individual’s confidence and fitness with a strong sense of participation and fun.
The Sunday morning was mild and bright which always helps for your first triathlon. Women’s Initiative head coach and race director for the day Kate Hawney set off proceedings with the race briefing.
The emphasis is very much on enjoyment of the event as well as safety.
All of the finishers were awarded a medal which represents the fact that all competitors are winners for completing the training programme as well as the triathlon.
Many women who participate in the Women’s Initiative often go on to take on the sport and compete in other triathlon events.
Teas, coffees, sandwiches and cake were served afterwards where people could share their stories and savour their success!
Overall the day was a resounding success showing the community and participatory spirit within Sligo Triathlon Club.
