United and Liverpool greats to visit town

TWO football legends are coming to Sligo next month.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar and Manchester United player Andre Kanchelski­s are coming to two separate events, organised by the Liverpool and Manchester United Sligo Supporters clubs.

Grobbelaar, the 60-year-old South African keeper, was with Liverpool from 1981 to 1994, during which he made 628 appearance­s and won the European Cup, League six times and three FA Cups to name a few.

Grobbelaar won more medals at Liverpool than any other keeper in the club’s history, making him one of the favourites among fans.

He is coming to Sligo on Friday, November 3rd, for a special meet and greet function with fans in Lola Montex from 8pm.

The Sligo Branch of the Liverpool Supporters’ Club say tickets are selling fast for the event and people interested in going should book them as soon as possible.

They are priced at €25 for adults, €10 for teenagers and under 12s go free. Phone Graham on 087 9966994.

The meet and greet evening with Grobbelaar is expected to be a sell out.

Also next month, the Russian winger Andrei Kanchelski­s will be meeting his Sligo fans in a function being organised by the Sligo Branch of the Manchester United Supporters’ Club.

He will be in Sligo on Friday, November 19th for the event in the Embassy Rooms.

The 48-year-old former player was with Manchester United from 1991 to 1995, he also played with Dynamo Kyiv, Shaktar Donetsk, Everton, Fiorentina, Rangers and Southampto­n to name a few, before returning to play in his home country.

In his time at United he won 2 premier league titles, the FA Cup , League Cup and European Super Cup.

He made 132 appearance­s for United, scoring 36 goals

After leaving Everton in 1997, he had a spell with Fiorentina, before joining Glasgow Rangers and also had a spell with Southampto­n.

He also made over 50 internatio­nal appearance­s and has one unique claim to fame, he is the only player to score in Manchester, Merseyside and Glasgow derbies.

The Russian is visiting Sligo to launch his new book.

Kencheikic­s will be in Sligo o Sunday, November 19th, in the Embassy Rooms.

He will sign copies of his book and hold a Question and Answer session.

Tickets for the night are 20 and this includes a signed copy of the book.

Tickets are available from Sligo Branch committee members.

Both nights should be a fascinatin­g insight into the players’ careers and fans will be eager to get photograph­ed with their footballin­g heroes.
