Five goals for Kelly as Cornview Celtic run

-

THE Sligo Rovers Astro League saw five fixtures down for decision on the Showgrounds astro pitch last week.

The opening fixture saw high flying Cornview Celtic in action against a young but energetic Ballymote Celtic. Both sides managed to put together some nice moves early on but failed to capitalise in the final third. However, just when it seemed that Ballymote were settling into the game well, Cornview struck the opening goal of the game courtesy of Gareth Kelly. The league’s leading goal scorer then went on to fire another two before the halt time break, ensuring his hat trick. Damien Lyons also got on the score sheet before half time to make it 4-0.

To their credit however, Ballymote never gave up the battle and were rewarded early on in the second half as Joe Kyle made it 4-1. The respite was short lived however, as Gareth Kelly added another two goals to his name on the night while Keith Carty also scored. The final result was 7-2 to Cornview, with Alan Farry getting the second goal for Ballymote.

Wednesday night provided a double header of fixtures, with the Sally Gardens facing the White Gorillas followed by Foleys Bar against Inter Inferno at 9pm. Going in as favourites into the game, the Sally Gardens went into the game under some pressure and were looking to bounce back after their shock 4-1 defeat the previous week.

On the other hand, the White Gorillas were beaming with confidence following their 4-2 victory over GSS the previous week. It took until 15 minutes from time before the deadlock was broken and it was Josh Verden who gave the Ballisadare men the lead. Despite coming under pressure thereafter, Sallys managed to make it 2-0 before the full time whistle courtesy of Adrian Egan. The result ensured that the Sally Gardens returned to form as they aim to keep in touch of the leading pack. Foley’s Bar continued their impressive start to the season by registering a 2-0 victory over a brave Inter Inferno side. Inter have yet to register a single point this season, however based on their performances to date,

Gary Rooney opened the scoring for Foleys and Lee Marshall doubled the lead. That made it 4 wins from 4 for Foley’s bar, who now sit pretty at the top of the league and will be confident of maintaining that position in the coming weeks.

Calry and Forrest Celtic played out a 1-1 draw on Friday last which was then followed by an impressive 3-1 victory for Strand Celtic over GSS.
